Man Utd could ‘take a few steps’ for ‘magic’ £105m star at Old Trafford

Manchester United “could decide to take a few steps” in their pursuit of Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinković-Savić in the next few weeks, journalist Rudy Galetti has told GiveMeSport.

Erik ten Hag will be looking towards the summer market as he looks to strengthen his squad at Old Trafford.

Man Utd transfer news – Sergej Milinković-Savić

According to reports in Italy, Milinković-Savić wants to leave Lazio in search of silverware and has decided that he will not be renewing his contract with the capital club, which is set to expire in the summer of 2024.

The Sun reported back in October that Manchester United, Liverpool and Juventus were all interested in the 27-year-old’s services, but the Serie A side’s president in Claudio Lotito has suggested that the midfielder could cost as much as £105m, telling Il Messaggero: “I have no agreement with his agent [Mateja] Kezman to sell him to Juventus or anyone else in the winter. On the contrary, he is now worth €120m [£105m], not €100m [£88m]. Every month the price goes up.”

Transfer insider Dean Jones told GiveMeSport in December that Arsenal could have a free run at the Serbia international during the January transfer window following his underwhelming performances at the World Cup, but the Gunners ended up recruiting Chelsea midfielder Jorginho instead.

But Galetti now believes that United could progress their interest in Milinković-Savić in the next few weeks.

What has Galetti said about Man Utd and Milinković-Savić

Galetti told GiveMeSport: “In the next few weeks, Manchester United could decide to take a few steps. But as I said before today, the situation for Milinković-Savić is still.”

Would Milinković-Savić be a good signing for Man Utd?

Milinković-Savić – who has been described as “magic” by teammate Ciro Immobile – would likely be a fantastic addition in the centre of ten Hag’s midfield as he looks to evolve the current Red Devils squad.

The 39-cap Serbia international has made 19 Serie A appearances for Lazio this season hitting the back of the net four times and providing eight assists, suggesting that he can provide a source of goal output from the middle of the park.

The 6 foot 4 compares favourably with his positional peers in plenty of aspects of his game, ranking in the top 2% of midfielders across Europe’s big five leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League for assists (0.32) and top 4% for non-penalty goals per 90 minutes (0.26) over the last 365 days, according to FBref.

Therefore, it is likely that Milinković-Savić would be an improvement on what ten Hag currently has in his United midfield, but the Red Devils want to get his price tag down before discussing any potential move for the Serbian.
