Mallorca vs Real Valladolid Preview

Mallorca take on Real Valladolid this weekend in a clash between two bottom half sides who currently look quite well placed to beat the drop. There have certainly been more positives than negatives for Javier Aguirre and Pacheta so far this season but they did both lose their first league games back from the World Cup last week.

Mallorca were particularly disappointing in their 2-0 loss at Getafe. It was a really tame performance by their standards having fought hard and been competitive in almost every match so far this season until that point. They failed to register a shot on target at the Coliseum and deserved to leave without a result.

They responded with a 2-0 Extra Time win at Pontevedra in the Copa del Rey in midweek with Vedat Muriqi and Abdon Prats coming off the bench to score the goals. They haven’t exactly been prolific at home this season though with just 5 goals in 7 games and Mallorca are yet to score more than once in front of their own fans. They could perhaps do with trying to add an extra creative player in January to bolster their attacking options.

Real Valladolid are enjoying a pretty strong return to the top flight overall but that has largely been down to their home form. On their travels it’s 5 defeats from 7 matches with their solitary road win coming at Getafe. Since then, they’ve been beaten to nil by Espanyol, Osasuna and Athletic in their subsequent three away fixtures.

Pacheta’s side returned to action last week with a 2-0 home loss against the defending champions. Real Valladolid competed well for much of the game but two late Karim Benzema strikes proved decisive. They had Sergio Leon sent off late in that game and were reduced to 10 men after just 5 minutes in midweek against Alaves in the Copa del Rey with Zouhair Feddal’s early red contributing to their demise.

Score Prediction: Mallorca 0-0 Real Valladolid

This doesn’t have the makings of a classic with neither side prolific goal scorers. Both average just 0.87 goals per game this term with only Cadiz and Elche having worse records. Real Valladolid need to find a way to start grinding out a few away results to support their strong home form and they’ve a decent chance of doing that here with Mallorca a slightly one-dimensional side who may struggle to create a lot of opportunities in this one.
