Mainz saw off Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 at Borussia-Park on Friday night.
Gladbach came close to opening the scoring after around 26 minutes when Tim Kleindienst’s header was tipped onto the crossbar by Robin Zentner.
Instead, it was Mainz who broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Paul Nebel to head into the break 1-0 up.
Dominik Kohr doubled the lead shortly after the break when he slotted home after Nadiem Amiri’s free-kick.
Stefan Lainer threw Gladbach a lifeline in the 73rd minute after Robin Zentner failed to deal with a cross properly and the ball fell at the Gladbach defender’s feet.
But Nadiem Amiri soon crushed Gladbach’s hopes of a comeback, slamming the ball into the net to make it 3-1.
The win leaves Mainz in third place, two points in front of fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who take on Union Berlin on Sunday.
