Liverpool now ‘making checks’ over £105m star at Anfield – GiveMeSport

Liverpool will be “making checks” on the future of World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez, transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed to GIVEMESPORT.

Fernandez shone for Argentina as they danced their way to a third-ever World Cup triumph in Qatar, with Liverpool likely to be one of the clubs monitoring his progress.

What’s the latest involving Enzo Fernandez and Liverpool?

It’s been a sharp rise to prominence for Argentine midfielder Fernandez. Having made his international debut as recently as September 2022, the 21-year-old was parachuted into the Argentina starting-11 midway through their World Cup campaign, with his performances helping guide La Albiceleste to glory.

Named as the tournament’s Young Player of the Season, Fernandez featured in all seven matches for Argentina, contributing with a goal and an assist. Fernandez’s exploits in Qatar unsurprisingly saw the midfielder’s stock rise across Europe, and he has a release clause of €120m (£105m) according to Fabrizio Romano.

Despite only signing for Benfica in a deal worth €18 million last summer, Fernandez is already being tipped with a move away from Portugal. A product of the River Plate academy, Fernandez has been tipped for stardom since an early age with Liverpool one of the sides reported to be interested.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo claimed Liverpool is Fernandez’s “priority”, with the Reds lining up a summer move for the Argentine midfielder. In the same report, it is mooted that interest in Fernandez is rife across Europe, as big clubs from “Spain, Italy, England and France”, begin to probe the player.

What has Jones said about Fernandez and Liverpool?

Tipped to continue his rapid rise through the footballing ranks, transfer inside Dean Jones believes Fernandez’s next move will be to a Champions League regular.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones revealed: “The performances he’s just put in at the World Cup mean he’s probably going to join a top Champions League club.

“Manchester City will have an eye on him, Liverpool will be making checks on him.

“Other clubs across Europe who are established Champions League clubs will be doing that too.”

What does Fernandez offer Liverpool?

As demonstrated in Qatar, Fernandez is a dynamic midfielder capable of performing a number of different roles. Possessing the ability to create chances, dictate play and break up opposition attacks, Fernandez could prove a vital asset to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool’s midfield has proved a problem area for some time now, with a combination of injuries, ageing players and poor form costing the Reds when it matters most. With the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson over the age of 30 and Fabinho’s form wobbling so far this season, a midfield refresh could be necessary if Klopp’s side are to continue competing.

Fernandez undoubtedly fits the Klopp mould and the 21-year-old starlet could find himself at the heart of a transfer saga between Europe’s top clubs in the following months.
