Liverpool ‘might be making headway’ on more signings after Gakpo at Anfield – GiveMeSport

Liverpool could look to add a defender and a midfielder to Jürgen Klopp’s squad at Anfield during the January window, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Reds have already secured the signing of PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo for an initial fee of £37m plus add-ons.

Liverpool transfer news – January

It’s no secret that Liverpool are on the lookout for midfield additions, with the current squad having four players in the position whose contracts expire at the end of the season.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keïta, Arthur Melo and James Milner all seem unlikely to remain at the Merseyside giants beyond next summer, with a complete reshuffle potentially required in the middle of the park in 2023.

The Reds have reportedly identified Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham as their top target according to Sky Germany (via Sky Sports), but any deal is likely to take place in the summer rather than the January transfer window, with the 19-year-old likely to cost more than £100m.

Jones told GiveMeSport at the beginning of December that a midfield addition was a possibility in January, but now the journalist believes that a defender could be on the cards as well at Anfield.

What has Jones said about Liverpool?

When talking about Liverpool’s potential January transfer business after signing Gakpo, Jones told GiveMeSport: “We know there’s a possibility of a defender, there’s still the possibility of a central midfielder. Now they can really focus on those two things.

“For all we know, they might have already been making headway. They keep these things so quiet, you never know what might already be going on.”

Who could Liverpool target in January?

According to O Jogo in Portugal, Liverpool are looking at potentially beating arch-rivals Manchester United to another signing, this time in the form of Benfica and World Cup winner Enzo Fernández.

The Portuguese club have recently turned down an £88m bid from an unnamed club for the midfielder but the report suggests that both Klopp and Erik ten Hag are prepared to intensify their pursuit of the 21-year-old.

Meanwhile, according to the Daily Express, Liverpool are serious in their pursuit of Fiorentina and Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat and reports in Italy suggest that the Florence club would not turn down a bid worth £35m.

It is set to be an important few months at Anfield, with Klopp largely looking to rebuild the nucleus of a side that has served him so well over the years and the club would go a long way to helping the 55-year-old with a few more key additions in the new year.
