Liverpool could still make a late move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes ahead of the summer transfer deadline, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
Jurgen Klopp has overseen a solid summer of business at Anfield and the Reds could still strengthen further with weeks remaining until the window slams shut.
What is the latest on Nunes?
Only three new faces have arrived on the red half of Merseyside this summer in the form of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay, with £77 million spent in total.
That fee will pass the £100 million mark if they do complete a move for Nunes this summer, however.
A £51 million release clause is reportedly included in the 23-year-old’s contract which is set to expire in four years’ time. Leeds United and Wolves have both been linked as well but the player apparently wants to stay in the capital according to reports in Portugal.
However, former Liverpool midfielder Abel Xavier believes a departure is inevitable, saying: “I believe that Sporting will not be able to hold a player of this size due to his quality, which means he would adapt to any top English team. His departure from Sporting is a matter of time.”
What has Jones said on Nunes?
The transfer insider believes that Nunes would be a perfect fit for the Reds if they were to snap him up this summer and they already have scouting reports prepared on the player.
However, he also says that a move this season is unlikely but could still be one to watch moving forwards.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “There’s Matheus Nunes at Sporting. That’s one to look out for if they do go into the market. He would be a good fit. I know that Liverpool have got some scouting reports on him made up already. He’s the perfect profile that they would normally look for in a signing. I’m not convinced that they will go ahead with this before deadline day, it might just be one that they’ve got on the back burner, but it’s probably a name to look out for if they do.”
Will Liverpool make a move this summer?
When a young talent like Nunes has a release clause it is hard to ever rule out a deal being done, especially late in the day.
But it appears that Liverpool’s business is done for the summer, barring any horrendous injuries to key men.
Klopp told Sky Sports News in July when asked about further deals: “Unless we have injuries or player sales no, we have our squad. Hopefully, there won’t be any so Liverpool supporters can focus on other things.”
