Liverpool supporters have brutally turned on ‘absolutely shocking’ star who has been labelled as ‘terrible’ during their last-gasp 1-0 victory over Burnley on Sunday afternoon. It was another smash and grab performance from the travelling side as they were made to work hard to retain their place at the top of the league table.
The Premier League champions found their trip to Turf Moor difficult for the most part, with the first half forcing Arne Slot into two substitutions. Milos Kerkez’s disciplinary issues – after picking up a yellow card and being fortunate not to receive a second – were compounded by an injury to Alexis Mac Allister, while their newly-promoted opposition’s counter-attacks gave them every reason to stay on edge at all times.
In the end, it took a red card to Lesley Ugochukwu and a 94th-minute Mohamed Salah penalty to secure a fourth successive win of the season, keeping Liverpool as the only club in the league with a 100 per cent record. But the victory didn’t come without more late heart-in-mouth moments, and their flat attacking display has seen one player singled out for criticism.
Liverpool Supporters Turn on Cody Gakpo After Burnley Performance
Since Darwin Nunez’s departure to Saudi Arabia, Liverpool fans have found a new scapegoat in Cody Gakpo – though their criticism can often feel tedious given his output in the Reds’ attack. In his 80-minute outing at Turf Moor, he made two key passes, completed 100 percent of his dribble attempts, and won three of his four ground duels.
Despite being the highest-rated attacking player, according to Sofascore, Liverpool supporters voiced their frustration with the Dutch winger on social media. “I don’t care if Gakpo gets goals, when he’s bad he’s absolutely shocking. Can’t wait till he’s out of the team,” one X user wrote, echoing the belief that once Alexander Isak is fully fit, Hugo Ekitike will take over on the left flank. Another remarked:
“Not sure how many more times I can watch Gakpo be so predictable.”
A third user wrote: “Gakpo and Salah have been terrible today. They’ve not got into the game at all,” as a fourth added: “Gakpo is such a useless player man.” Elsewhere, a fifth concluded: Gakpo has been terrible today.”
Since joining from PSV in 2023, Gakpo has recorded 42 goals and 19 assists in 133 appearances. But for a side determined to keep their success rolling, standards are always pushed higher – especially with fierce competition for places. Both the aforementioned Ekitike and £116 million summer signing Florian Wirtz are also capable of playing on the left wing.
