Liverpool Failed to Sign £2.5m Ace Klopp ‘Discovered’ on YouTube

Liverpool are believed to be one of the clubs interested in a move for an £80 million star who they missed out on for just £2.5 million after Jurgen Klopp spotted the talent after watching videos of him on YouTube. The Reds are set for a big summer, with a deal for Jeremie Frimpong all but complete, while his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz is also said to be prioritising a move to Anfield.

Arne Slot clearly has no interest in resting on his laurels after winning the Premier League in his debut season and is preparing to break the bank to make his champions even stronger. Though he could already have one of his targets at his disposal had the club finalised what would’ve been a bargain deal several years ago.

In an interview with Canal do Nicola, as per the Mirror, former Santos boss Elano revealed that it was in fact Real Madrid star Rodrygo that Klopp had discovered online and desperately tried to bring to Merseyside. According to Elano, who was also the player’s former agent, he had been contacted about a potential move and explained where the interest first stemmed from:

“He had gone on YouTube, searched ‘talents from Brazil’, Rodrygo had appeared, and he was very young. He [Jurgen Klopp] came to Brazil and liked him. They contacted me, the Liverpool director wanted him to be his first signing, Rodrygo.”

With a fee of £2.5 million being touted, it seemed like a no-brainer to bring in the budding superstar. However, in an interview with the Guardian, the player revealed why the move never came to fruition.

“We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to,” the winger stated. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football.

“It had always been my dream to play in Europe. Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder.

“I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”

While the move didn’t happen at the time, it could still yet as Rodrygo is said to be unhappy at Real Madrid and wants to leave the club in the summer. The 24-year-old has taken a backseat to the likes of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior – the latter of whom he no longer has a relationship with.

Valued at £80 million, Liverpool are among several English clubs believed to be exploring the possibility of a deal, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal also in the running.
