Liverpool FC have made their move and contacted Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso over their future managerial vacancy, according to a report this Wednesday from Foot Mercato. The Reds will part ways with Jürgen Klopp at the end of the season, putting an end to a trophy-laden nine-year spell with the German manager at the helm.
Xabi Alonso, himself a former Liverpool player, is the early favorite to take over at Anfield on the back of his remarkable stint at Bayer Leverkusen. Die Schwarzroten are top of the Bundesliga and are still involved in DFB Pokal as well as in Europa League. Marseille president Pablo Longoria recently revealed that the Spain international “knew exactly which three or four clubs he wanted to coach and he was prepared to wait for them”.
Should Xabi Alonso entertain the opportunity to coach one of his former sides, it appears Liverpool would be a match, considering Carlo Ancelotti recently renewed with Real Madrid and that Thomas Tuchel’s post at FC Bayern Munich is not under immediate threat. The prospect of returning to the club with which he won the first of his two Champions League titles may appeal to Alonso.
Foot Mercato add that the Spaniard is at the top of Liverpool’s shortlist to replace the departing Klopp and that the Premier League current leaders have “taken matters into their hands” and got in touch with Alonso.
