Having won just one of his last eight games in charge, Paul Simonis is under heavy pressure as VfL Wolfsburg coach.

Simonis has been backed to stay in charge for this weekend’s game against Hoffenheim following Tuesday’s 0-1 DFB-Pokal defeat to Holstein Kiel, but it remains unclear whether he will keep his job if Die Wölfe slip up again.

Should the Dutchman ultimately be sacked, Wolfsburg could turn to a former coach, with Wolfsburg Allgemeine Zeitung reporting that Bruno Labbadia is the favourite to replace Simonis.

The 59-year-old has plenty of experience in relegation battles and could restore discipline to Wolfsburg’s seemingly fractured squad.

Labbadia has been without a club since leaving VfB Stuttgart in April 2023. He was Wolfsburg’s coach between February 2018 and June 2019.
