Following a deadline day loan move from Bayer Leverkusen to Werder Bremen, Victor Boniface has managed just 191 minutes of Bundesliga football for his new club. When questioned about his line-up to face struggling Mainz on Saturday, Horst Steffen remained tight-lipped.
Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, Steffen hinted at rotation despite winning their Matchday 8 clash against Union Berlin. When asked about the “never change a winning team” formula, Steffen replied: “I see things differently.
“I look at the opponent and consider what might work and how the training week went.
“If, at the end, I feel we need to play differently, then that’s what I’ll do.”
When discussing Boniface in particular, Steffen said: “That was a good feeling that he was able to give me,” when discussing the Nigerian forward’s 85 minutes against Union in what was his first start.
But Steffen remained tight-lipped regarding Boniface’s chances of playing at the weekend, stating that training “went fairly normally,” and that “nothing had improved or worsened.”
