Kylian Mbappé spoke with Antoine Griezmann following France captaincy decision

L’Équipe report today that Kylian Mbappé decided to have a one-on-one discussion with Antoine Griezmann in the wake of Didier Deschamps’ decision to name the Paris Saint-Germain man captain of the French national team.

The two forwards were in contention for the armband in the wake of Hugo Lloris’ international retirement. Deschamps had decided to meet with both separately after the squad’s first dinner of the international break, on Monday, to reveal his decision.

The following day, having caught wind of the Atlético Madrid man’s disappointment at missing out on the captaincy – to the point of considering his future with the French team – Mbappé sat down with Griezmann to tell him that he understood his disappointment, but that he was counting on him. The last World Cup’s top scorer also explained to the 32-year-old that his concept of the captaincy would leave others the room to take on a major leadership role as well, such as Griezmann himself or another veteran in Olivier Giroud.

It now remains to be seen whether that discussion will assuage the Les Bleus veteran’s dismay and see the two players click together on the pitch again, Griezmann in his new-founnd midfield role.
