The first half passed with relatively little goalmouth action in Sinsheim. There was little to seperate the teams in terms of chances with four apiece at the interval. Hoffenheim came closest to finding a goal in that time frame. Ihlas Bebou curled wide in the 14th minute, while Weghorst failed to convert Robert Skov’s cross.

Upon the restart, Hoffenheim took up where they had left off. Bebou firing another effort down the throat of Marvin Schwäbe. Both teams made a handful if changes which included the introduction of the surprisingly benched Kramarić alongside Stach. Köln also replaced Kainz with the fleet-footed Maina.

Just as it appeared as if the afternoon affair would end scoreless, Köln youngster Max Finkgräfe found the net to give Die Geißböcke the lead. The full-back whipped a spectacular 25-metre freekick over the wall and beyond Oliver Baumann’s fingertips in the 79th minute. On the cusp of victory and three vital points, the hosts responded to equalise at 1-1. As is often the case, Andrej Kramarić remained composed to steer the ball home with the aid of the right post.
