FC Köln have confirmed that Timo Horn will leave the club this summer after more than 20 years with the club.

The 29-year-old’s contract, which expires at the end of the season, will not be renewed.

Having slipped behind Marvin Schwäbe in the pecking order, Horn wants to be first-choice elsewhere.

“Leaving FC is an incredibly difficult decision, which I am sure everyone can understand. I’ve been an FC fan for as long as I can remember. I’ve been with the club ever since I started playing football, and I’ve always been between the sticks for FC since my first-team debut in 2012. This situation changed after my injury last season,” said the goalkeeper.

“Competition is part of football, the role of number two is something new for me, but I’ve always given 100%, taken the situation as it is and reached Europe for the second time in my career. Being part of the team and achieving that makes me incredibly proud. But my goal is to play every week and be there for my team. That is why I have decided to look for a new challenge this summer.

“For all the years and experiences in the Geißbockheim, the feeling of togetherness with the people in the club, who always give everything for the FC, I am very, very grateful. I will remain an FC fan, no matter where I follow the club from, and I wish the club all the best.”

Horn made a total of 329 appearances for FC Köln.
