Keith Hackett Claims Liverpool vs Arsenal Ref Should Be ‘Suspended’

Howard Webb has been urged to keep Andy Madley away from Premier League fixtures this weekend after his performance during Liverpool vs Arsenal drew criticism.

Several incidents occurred as Mikel Arteta’s side won at Anfield for the first time in 14 years. Both teams felt decisions could’ve gone for them, with each situation receiving huge attention in the aftermath.

Young midfielder Trey Nyoni went unpunished for a strong early challenge, Jurrien Timber pulled Alexander Isak’s shirt inside the box, and Alexis Mac Allister went to ground after going head-to-head with Noni Madueke.

Fans on social media have continued to debate whether spot kicks or red cards should’ve been awarded. Now, former head of the PGMOL Keith Hackett has given his thoughts.

Hackett, speaking to Football Insider, admitted he was surprised to see Madley given the biggest fixture of the weekend in the first place. He said: “I was surprised, having watched his recent performances, that Andy Madley was appointed to this game.

“We have elite referees within the group. We have a pecking order, and those referees that are in form should get this game.”

He went a step further and suggested that if he were in Howard Webb’s shoes, Madley would be stood down for the upcoming gameweek. Hackett continued:

“There are going to be knocks on the door saying, ‘Boss, why haven’t I got a game?’ And I would be saying, ‘You need to improve your performance and be more consistent.’

“I don’t think he had his best game, and I don’t know what his best game is. We’ve highlighted a number of ifs, and I’ve highlighted one that is 100 per cent incorrect.

“That says to me, next week if I was doing the appointments, he ain’t got a game.”

Speaking during the match, the former FIFA referee claimed the home team would feel ‘aggrieved’ at Madley and VAR’s decision not to award a penalty for Timber’s pull on Isak.

“Liverpool will feel really aggrieved at half-time. Replays showing, very clearly, that Arsenal’s Timber had a fistful of the shirt of Isak. As Isak jumps to head the ball, he was prevented from making contact – that is a clear penalty kick,” he said.

“We ask once again: Where was the referee positioned? Why didn’t he take action? If he was poorly positioned and didn’t see the offence, then this surely is what VAR is for. VAR should have intervened, the pull impacted on the forward heading the ball. It was a clear penalty kick.”

The Premier League released a statement clarifying the decision, which read: “The referee’s call of no violent conduct by Madueke on Mac Allister was checked and confirmed by VAR.

“VAR: ‘All of the situations have been checked and cleared. There is some contact as Madueke and Mac Allister square-up. In my opinion, it’s not forceful, not violent, not brutal.'”
