Keith Downie hints at transfer plans for January

Newcastle United‘s strategy in the January transfer window has been outlined, and they may target a midfielder and a winger, according to journalist Keith Downie.

The PIF have heavily invested in the squad since taking over at St James’ Park in October 2021, and they are now considering providing Eddie Howe with more options, to strengthen the Magpies’ bid to secure European football next season.

What is the latest news involving Newcastle?

Newcastle have been linked with the signing of midfielder James Maddison for some time, having gone in for the England international in the summer window, however Ben Jacobs reports that his current club’s valuation was £10m or £15m higher than the PIF were willing to pay.

As per recent claims from Downie, the Magpies would have to break their existing wage structure if they were to entice Maddison, so a potential deal would hinge on whether they value the target highly enough to do so.

CalcioMercatoWeb have issued a recent update surrounding Dusan Vlahovic, and they now believe the Tyneside club are in the running to sign the Juventus striker, even suggesting that a potential exchange deal could be done including Alexander Isak.

A tussle may also take place in the January market between Newcastle and Barcelona, as Super Vasco report that both clubs are in the running to sign Vasco da Gama’s Andrey Santos, an 18-year-old midfielder, who has been showing promising signs in Brazil.

What has Downie said about Newcastle?

As indicated by the players that the Magpies have been linked with, Downie believes that Howe is in the hunt for a midfielder, but he also details a winger as a potential option, and even suggests that the club could dip into the loan market, telling GIVEMESPORT: “I wouldn’t be surprised to see them bring in a midfielder and a winger, with one of them being a loan.

If they can get a loan deal done, then I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what they do.

Which target would improve Newcastle most?

Santos appears to one for the future, and Vlahovic has a great record in Serie A, scoring 17 goals in 21 appearances last season, however Howe should prioritise the signing of Maddison in the January window.

The Englishman has made 185 appearances for Leicester, and has impressed over a number of seasons, but now at 26, he is just starting to come into his prime, as indicated by seven goals and four assists in 13 Premier League appearances this season.

As a player who specialises in an advanced midfield role, but is also adept at playing on the wing, he ticks both boxes in terms of what Howe is believed to want in January, and would be a vast improvement on current option Jacob Murphy, who has just 2 goal contributions in 15 league outings.

Hailed as “unbelievable” by potential future teammate Kieran Trippier, Maddison would be a quality signing in January, and he would be a real boost in Newcastle’s push for European football.
