Jon Jones’s 8-Word Direct Message to Tom Aspinall is Downright Brutal

Jon Jones has directed an eight-word statement to UFC rival Tom Aspinall that is downright brutal.

Jones is the UFC heavyweight champion, having left the light heavyweight division years ago to first defeat Ciryl Gane by first-round annihilation, before brutalizing Stipe Miocic with a spinning back kick. His greatest challenge in the entire UFC roster, though, is the UFC’s interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall.

It is unheard of for a champion to reign so long, and be seemingly willing to take on other challengers, yet overlook the interim champion who, by merit, has a claim of his own to the crown. But Jones wants to instead diminish Aspinall, while apparently refusing to fight him.

UFC’s heavyweight champion continues to avoid the interim king

Though Jones and Aspinall’s heavyweight status has been intertwined for a while, the latest drama arose when the American learned of the Brit’s latest comments — that he doesn’t care too much about fighting Jones, he just wants the championship title which leading MMA reporter Ariel Helwani recently described as being held hostage.

Jones’s response to Aspinall was wild:

“Shut your mouth and do as you’re told.”

UFC boss Dana White has long been clear that the Jones and Aspinall fight has to happen, and Aspinall has been on record numerous times of late to suggest he’s eager to take on one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. Helwani, meanwhile, has claimed that the hold-up is exclusively on Jones’s part, and that the UFC has really obliged any of the champion’s requests.

Jones has even previously said he’d only take the fight if the UFC offered him a $30 million purse for the bout.

It would have been a suitable headliner for International Fight Week at the end of June, but there is too little time now to promote the fight for the summer. And so, if it were to happen this year, it would presumably only really land on the card for when UFC returns to New York City.

In the meantime, Aspinall will continue to be sidelined. And Jones will continue to keep the belt hostage.
