Jeremy Jacquet is Fast Becoming Liverpool’s Best Player Since Prime Salah

Liverpool and Andoni Iraola would have been disappointed to lose their unbeaten start to the season against Manchester City earlier this month, but they have bounced back fantastically since.

Iraola’s men have won four consecutive games since, with the latest an impressive and dominant 2-0 win against Fabian Hurzeler’s in-form Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

If there were any worries about their goalscoring earlier in the campaign, they have also answered those concerns with 14 goals across those four victories, although they did concede three in both of their Champions League fixtures against LASK and Villarreal.

That is something to work on for Iraola as he knows Liverpool will be punished by better opposition later on in the Champions League should they advance, but in general things are going positively given he probably didn’t get every signing he wanted in the summer.

It already appears as though the Reds could be one of the busier clubs in the 2027 transfer windows, if they are to dip into the market to sign a new central midfielder and right-winger for example.

The Merseyside outfit also look to need to invest in a new right-back, unless they see Ronald Araujo as the answer there and sign him permanently, while decisions are still to be made over new contracts for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

Should the experienced duo, Ward and Iraola would need to work to ensure that they effectively replace two players who have been so important for the club for so many years.

Liverpool have invested in the centre-back position in recent years, and we likely would have seen a lot more from Giovanni Leoni had he not suffered a serious knee injury on his first appearance against Southampton in September 2025, which has kept him on the sidelines ever since.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe is already looking like a top signing for the future judging by his performances on loan at Levante, but most impressive of all is Jeremy Jacquet.

When you look at the impact Van Dijk has made and how influential he has been at the heart of Liverpool’s central defence for many years, it’s hard not to look at Jacquet right now and feel like he can go on to follow in the Dutchman’s footsteps.

There would have been a few raised eyebrows when the Reds spent £60m to sign the towering centre-back from Rennes in January, and fans didn’t get to see him in a Liverpool shirt until the summer after he spent the remainder of the campaign on loan in France.

What is quickly becoming clear this term is that £60m could prove to be a bargain for Jacquet, who is probably the Merseyside outfit’s player of the season to date.

The youngster has been absolutely exceptional in defence and even in the 6-3 win against LASK, Liverpool conceded all three goals after he was substituted off just after the hour-mark.

Jacquet has the opportunity to learn alongside Reds captain Van Dijk this season and that opportunity could prove to be priceless for a player who looks to have everything to become one of the best centre-backs in the world, just like the Dutchman did.

Van Dijk was full of praise for the Frenchman following Sunday’s win against the Seagulls.

Listen, he is a fantastic player and he has huge potential. It is very exciting for Liverpool.

The 2025-26 season may have ended disappointingly for Mohamed Salah, as he ended up leaving the club in the summer, but he was in his prime the previous campaign as the Merseysiders won the Premier League title under Arne Slot.

Salah was Liverpool’s last top player when he was in that form, especially after a 2025-26 campaign that everyone at the club will want to forget.

Now, Jacquet has already established himself as one of the club’s best and most important players, and looks like he has played for them for years despite making just 12 appearances in a red shirt.
