Luis Enrique has denied that there was a now-or-never feeling about this campaign in his first press conference since Kylian Mbappé announced his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.
From the start of the year, it was increasingly apparent that this would be the final campaign that the club could call upon their record goal scorer. There would be no changing his mind, he would be leaving at the end of his contract where he will go on to become a Real Madrid player.
The seven-year stay in his hometown would not be extended. Luis Enrique’s actions had confirmed as much from February when it was reported that Mbappé had informed the PSG president of his decision.
The manager had increasingly relied upon other players during the league campaign as he teased that “sooner or later” the club would have to get used to playing without the Frenchman. The public confirmation from the forward only confirmed what had long been suspected.
‘It doesn’t change the general picture’ – Luis Enrique
Luis Enrique admitted as much, “We have known this for a long time, as did everyone else. It doesn’t change the general picture. All my decisions were made based on what I considered best for the team. There is still the Coupe de France to go for, that’s our goal. I’m convinced that the players will be stronger next season.”
The manager went on to thank Mbappé for his time, “All I can say is good things about Mbappé and his brother. I understand his decision, he spent seven years here, and he’s a club legend. He gave everything for PSG. He hasn’t said where he’s going yet, even though we think it’s clear. He’s a leader, with a smile.”
