One of the most interesting games in the opening round of group stage fixtures at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will be the Group D clash between Chelsea and
Los Angeles FC on Monday.
Chelsea enter the Club World Cup off the back of a Europa Conference League conquest, beating Real Betis 4-1 in the final on May 28 to become the first team to win the Champions League, Europa League and the Europa Conference League.
The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League this season with 20 wins, nine losses and nine draws, booking a spot in next season’s Champions League thanks to a top-five finish.
The West London club qualified for the Club World Cup as one of the four most recent Champions League winners, having lifted the prestigious trophy in 2021.
LAFC, meanwhile, were the last club to qualify for the tournament after beating Club America 2-1 in a one-game playoff in Los Angeles on May 31, thanks to an extra-time goal from star winger Denis Bouanga.
The Black and Gold are currently fifth in the MLS Western Conference, with 26 points through 16 games. Steve Cherundolo’s group is undefeated in their last 10 games in all competitions, and are fresh off a 3-1 win over
Sporting Kansas City in league play on Sunday.

Chelsea Team News
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will be taking a new-look squad to America for the Club World Cup, including four new signings — Liam Delap, Mike Penders, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr — who will hope to make their Chelsea debuts during the tournament.
Chelsea are notably excited about the arrival of Delap, who is expected to be the club’s starting striker for the foreseeable future — a position the team has been trying to address for years. The 22-year-old recently completed a move from Ipswich Town, and has experience working with Maresca, when the two crossed paths in Manchester City’s youth setup in 2020-21.
However, a number of big names have been left out of the traveling 28-man squad, including Joao Felix, Axel Disasi, Djordje Petrovic, Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling, Kendry Paez and Renato Veiga.
LAFC Team News
LAFC’s squad has already received an injection of talent, as the SoCal club announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed Dutch international winger Javairo Dilrosun on loan from Mexican giants Club America. The club has confirmed that the 26-year-old will be available for selection for the Club World Cup.
Prior to Club America, Dilrosun featured for the likes of Hertha Berlin and Bordeaux. He played for AFC Ajax‘s youth academy as well as
Manchester City‘s youth setup.
Dilrosun joins a star-studded attack which includes Denis Bouanga, Olivier Giroud and Turkiye international forward Cengiz Under (although his loan is set to expire at the end of June).
Giroud will be particularly excited to face Chelsea, a club he played for between 2018 and 2021. The 38-year-old striker actually played a significant part in Chelsea’s qualification for the Club World Cup, having scored six goals in the club’s Champions League-winning campaign in 2021.
The French national team record goalscorer also won the FA Cup and the Europa League in his time with the Blues, and tallied 39 goals in 119 appearances across all competitions.
Giroud has struggled since making the move to MLS, managing only five goals and two assists in 33 games for LAFC.
