A gesture of good will on the part of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong could prove decisive in the club pushing a deal for transfer target Nico Williams over the line this summer.
That’s according to Diario Sport, who have on Sunday provided an insight into the situation.
De Jong, for his part, is currently locked in long-term contract renewal talks with those behind the scenes at the Camp Nou.
As much comes with a view to extending his deal from its current expiry in 2026, through the summer of 2029.
During these discussions, De Jong was asked whether he would be open to deferring his salary once more, after previously doing so to help the club during the Covid-19 pandemic.
And after initial resistance on the part of the Dutchman’s entourage, De Jong has now taken personal control of the situation.
To the point that, as per a report from Sport, an agreement is now all but imminent between the parties.
And with the club’s midfield standout having agreed to defer his salary once more next season, a path towards the signing of Athletic Club wide-man Nico Williams looks set to be opened:
‘Barça seem to have managed to structure the new contract by deferring some amounts, which will mean generating a salary margin that could be key to the signing of Nico Williams.’
