Borussia Mönchengladbach ended their losing streak with a comeback 3-2 victory at VfB Stuttgart on matchday 7. After the game, head coach Sebastian Hoeneß and Ermedin Demirović, who scored both of their goals, conceded Stuttgart’s performance didn’t deserve anything more.
“It’s a deserved defeat,” Hoeneß said in his post-match press conference as his team was booed by the fans both at the half-time break and after the full-time whistle. “We started the game well, but failed to capitalize on our chances to add a second goal. Too many mistakes crept into our play as the game progressed.
“This allowed Gladbach to feel they could get into the game. We’re not where we want to be in the Bundesliga at the moment. We need to get back to winning ways by focusing on the basics. If there’s anything positive to take away from this defeat, it’s that the lads recognize and accept this reality.”
The coach’s last statement was reflected by the words of the Bosnian striker after he scored for the first time in Bundesliga since matchday 2. The 28-year-old has now 30 Bundesliga goals since joining VfB from Augsburg in 2024.
“We weren’t good enough today,” Demirović started his assessment. “The disappointment is very strong. We had much higher expectations. Although we started the game well, we then let it slip away. That’s bitter, and not up to our standards. We didn’t manage to get the game back.”
Stuttgart will now travel to Paderborn for the DFB-Pokal tie. The Swabians beat the newly-promoted side 2-0 earlier this month in the Bundesliga.
