Malick Fofana (20) has had a rather subdued start to the season with Lyon, and this has not escaped Paulo Fonseca’s attention. The Belgium international winger started quite well with an assist for Lyon’s opening away win to Lens and a goal against Metz the following weekend. Since then, Fofana’s form has dipped and he has not registered a single contribution.
Fofana dropped to the bench for Lyon’s Europa League home win against Red Bull Salzburg. On the eve of Lyon’s home Ligue 1 game against Toulouse, Fonseca has called on Fofana to meet the standards he set last season. “I expect more, yes. I think he can do more and I spoke to him about it.“
The former Lille OSC and Milan head coach added that he specifically expects more consistency from the 20-year-old sensation, who was a target for several Premier League clubs during last summer’s transfer window. Fonseca still believes that Fofana is destined for Europe’s greatest clubs. “He must understand that this is an important season for him and that his time is now.”
