Girona vs Valencia Preview

Girona match action

Valencia travel to Catalonia this weekend with the alarm bells really starting to ring about where their season might be heading. Caretaker boss Voro is expected to be in charge again following the departure of Gennaro Gattuso earlier in the week.

This would be a tough game at the best of times as Girona have played some excellent football this season and always create chances at Montilivi. They were threatening in the latter stages of their derby with Barcelona last weekend and came close to grabbing a point at the death but a 1-0 loss means they stay on just one win in all competitions since the World Cup.

That came at home to Sevilla in January, with a 2-1 success the final match in a remarkable run that saw both teams score in 16 successive Girona games in all competitions. Michel has tweaked a few things to counter possession-heavy Villarreal and Barcelona in the last two games but we may see a more attacking display and a more open game again here with Valencia looking vulnerable right now.

It’s a sadly familiar tale at Mestalla with fan protests and another managerial casualty marking the end of a very quiet January transfer window. Things have been just as bleak on the pitch with Valencia taking just 1 point from their 5 league games since the World Cup. This youthful squad can only be low on confidence right now and it’s a big job that Voro has on his hands here.

He wasn’t helped by a moment of madness from Gabriel Paulista in midweek as the defender wildly kicked out at compatriot Vini in the 2-0 defeat at Real Madrid. He’ll be missing here although he hasn’t been a regular in the side this season in any case. Valencia really need somebody on the pitch to stand up and take responsibility for leading this side out of a crisis as there’s a danger they could fall into the relegation zone if results go against them this weekend.

Score Prediction: Girona 3-1 Valencia

Girona may have lost their last two but they’ve still competed pretty well and they’ll be in much better state mentally and physically than their opponents here with Valencia enduring a difficult January followed by a tough Thursday night in Madrid. Girona should be fresh and ready to go and they have enough quality in their ranks to claim the win.
