Flamengo technical director Jose Boto will hold talks with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to release midfielder Jorginho before the transfer window closes.
The Gunners have had plenty of injury concerns this campaign. Jorginho has provided quality cover, playing over 1,100 minutes in all competitions.
This has not ended speculation regarding his future. His current Gunners contract expires at the end of June, but Flamengo prefer to sign him in advance.
According to journalist Vene Casagrande, Boto will talk to Arteta to convince him to release the midfielder before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Arsenal unlikely to part ways with Jorginho mid-season
The Gunners have had to cope with early-season injuries to Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino. Jorginho has proved a good back-up option in midfield.
The Italy international has also started ahead of Thomas Partey on several occasions. The latter needs to be managed with caution, given his injury record.
With this in mind, it does not make sense to offload Jorginho this winter. The club are working on a deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, but he won’t arrive before the summer.
Jorginho, described as ‘one of the best‘ by Arteta, looks poised to stay at Arsenal for the season.
Flamengo have not given up on landing his signature this winter, but a pre-contract agreement for the summer seems the most likely solution for them.
Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that talks are underway over a three-year deal. Flamengo will have to wait until July at least to sign him on a free transfer.
