Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenković after West Ham loss: “Words fail me…”

Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenković has stated that lapses in concentration led to La Viola’s loss to West Ham in the Conference League final.

It was a late Jarrod Bowen goal that brought about a win for the Hammers, who had gone ahead through a Said Benrahma penalty but Jack Bonaventura had drawn level some minutes later. While Fiorentina did dominate possession for a majority of the game, West Ham picked their moments and got the goals.

After the game, Milenković spoke to Sky Italia (via TMW) about the defeat and he believes that La Viola couldn’t capitalise on the vital moments during the tie and lost concentration when they shouldn’t have.

“It hurts to lose like this, we played a good match today too. We can’t concede such an easy goal in the final minutes. Words fail me, however I know that the team gave their best but in certain situations we have to be more concentrated. We had the game in hand, pressing and maintaining domination of the pitch. In the finals, the details make the difference.”

The Serbian stated that the defenders misread the situation before the Bowen goal and this led to a confusion at the back and the decisive goal from the Englishman.

“We knew they would go deep with the ball. We misread that situation and it cost us dearly, the big teams don’t forgive anything in the finals, you have to be fully concentrated.”

Fiorentina are yet to win a single European trophy in their history and have now lost two finals in the same season. While that isn’t ideal, Vincenzo Italiano’s side should be proud of how far they came in the competition.
