Former France U21 international Nathanaël Mbuku (23) is set to return to French football with Ligue 2 side Montpellier HSC, having agreed a season-long loan deal from Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg, according to L’Équipe. The deal includes a €1.8m option to buy.
The Reims academy graduate spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, where he made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice. That spell included two UEFA Champions League outings before Augsburg activated a buy-back clause in his contract earlier this summer.
Now capped five times by DR Congo, scoring twice since switching allegiance in autumn 2024, Mbuku is expected to add much-needed attacking depth to Zoumana Camara’s squad as MHSC aim for an immediate return to Ligue 1 following relegation.
This will be Mbuku’s first campaign in Ligue 2, having previously made 77 appearances in the French top flight with Reims between 2019 and 2022.
