Jon Uriarte has been chosen as the new president of Athletic Club and Ernesto Valverde will be his manager.
Uriarte beat Iñaki Arechabaleta and Ricardo Barkala in today’s club elections in Bilbao. Valverde returns to the club after previous spells from 2003-05 and 2013-17.
Marcelo Bielsa and Valverde were the two potential options chosen among the three presidential candidates but the Argentine misses out on what would have been his second spell at the La Liga side.
Valverde, 58, is very popular among Athletic fans and takes over from the recently departed Marcelino García Toral at San Mamés.
The former Villarreal and Valencia manager returns to the dugout after two and a half years away from football.
FC Barcelona sacked Valverde in January 2020 following their Spanish Super Cup semi-final defeat to Atlético Madrid. Barcelona were top of La Liga at the time of his sacking under former club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
