Erling Haaland equals Thierry Henry’s Champions League knockout stage record

With his goal against Bayern Munich, Manchester City forward Erling Haaland (22) has equalled Thierry Henry’s 12 goals in the Champions League knockout stages.

Haaland scored the third goal in Manchester City’s 3-0 demolition of Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. The goal came after he had set up Bernardo Silva’s goal, City’s second of the game. The goal makes the former Borussia Dortmund striker the first to score 12 goals in the knockout stages of the competition in nine matches.

In doing so, he equals Henry’s 12 goals in the Champions League knockout stages. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has also scored 12 goals in this phase of the European competition. As well as equalling the French striker’s tally, Haaland also became the first Manchester City player to score 11 Champions League goals in a single season, whilst no player in history has reached 34 goals in the tournament quicker than Haaland. The Norwegian pulled off the feat in just 26 games; Ruud Van Nistelrooy reached the tally in 39 games.

However, Haaland still has a long way to go to reach Cristiano Ronaldo’s 67 goals scored in the Champions League knockout stage.
