Emma Raducanu’s Actual Take Home From Wimbledon Prize Money Revealed

Emma Raducanu was knocked out in the third round of Wimbledon on Friday, and it’s now been revealed just how much money she’s earned from her performance, and how much money she will actually take home.

The 22-year-old faced off against world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, losing in straight sets 7-6, 6-4. Before the match, the Brit was asked about her feelings about such a tough draw, and she showed absolute no fear, welcoming the test. But such a challenging match coming so early in the tournament would have had a notable impact on Raducanu’s take-home pay.

Her £152,000 in winnings is a far cry from the £3 million due to the tournament winner, and a recent analysis of the taxman’s cut only adds insult to injury. According to an Express Sport interview with Paul Barham, tax partner at Forvis Mazars, the former US Open champion has a sizeable tax bill on her Wimbledon earnings.

Emma Raducanu’s Tax Bill From Wimbledon Earnings

She won’t see anywhere near £152,000

He broke it down as follows: “Assuming that Emma is an additional rate taxpayer (with other income over £125,140), the tax rate that will apply to the prize money will be 45 percent, resulting in a UK tax liability of £68,400. Assuming Emma is resident in the UK, she is also likely to have Class Four National Insurance to pay at two percent on this income, resulting in a National Insurance liability of £3,040. Therefore, her take-home pay after tax and NIC would be £80,560.”

While some deductible expenses will reduce the final bill, it’s a hefty amount to have to cough up in any scenario. But despite a disappointing exit and some unfavourable accounting, Raducanu can walk away with her head held high following an exciting match with the very best of competition. Such an outlook may take some time to adopt, however. During her post-match press conference, the disappointment was still quite fresh.

What Emma Raducanu Said After Wimbledon Exit

The Brit was proud of her showing against the world number one

Emma Raducanu

“I think I’m just very self-critical,” she explained. “It’s hard to see. Of course, I’m very proud of being competitive on the court. I think I would rather that than it being completely one way.”

Raducanu once again displayed maturity beyond her years, adding: “Right now, it’s so soon after the match. I think it’s better for me to kind of feel a bit of the pain right now and then process it better that way.”

A tough week for the rising British star, but one she can learn from. At 22, she will have plenty of opportunities to progress further at Wimbledon, and plenty more cheques to cash along the way.
