Eibar vs Alaves Preview
The eyes of the football world may turn to Qatar and the World Cup this Sunday, but in the Basque Country it’s a slightly different matter with a derby clash between Eibar and Alaves kicking off just as the opening game in the Middle East ends. It’s a big game in terms of the race for promotion too with both sides currently in the top six of the Segunda Division.
That’s not a great surprise with Eibar narrowly missing out on automatic promotion last term while Alaves are in their first season at this level after a long stint in the top flight. It does get harder the longer you are in the second tier though and Eibar will be well aware they need to make this campaign count as their advantage as a relatively recently relegated club won’t count for as much from next season onwards.
They haven’t been great from a neutral perspective of late with 6 goals scored in their last 8 games, but Gaizka Garitano’s team have only lost one of those matches and they’ve won 2 of their last 3 by 1-0 margins. Victory here would feel a statement of sorts when it comes to their automatic promotion ambitions and they’d be just a point behind their opponents if they can get it.
Alaves are the table toppers heading into matchday 16. Luis García appears to be working his magic again at this level and the Vitoria-based team have made a pretty smooth transition to the Segunda Division despite a summer of vast changes. It’s notable that the two teams who were also relegated from LaLiga last term have already sacked coaches this season with the more fancied Granada and Levante having a harder time of it so far.
Since a rare off day in the shape of a 3-0 defeat at Burgos, Alaves have gone 6 without losing, winning 3 and drawing 3. This doesn’t feel like a league that is going to be dominated by any one side so you can afford to have the odd bad result, providing the response is positive and it certainly has been from an Alaves perspective. They will be expecting one of their toughest games of the season so far here though with Eibar very tough to beat at home.
Score Prediction: Eibar 1-0 Alaves
Eibar average 2.43 points per home game this season, the joint best record in the division. They are yet to lose at Ipurua and home advantage may just tilt this in their favour although it is likely to be tight with both sides solid defensively whilst not scoring huge numbers of goals.
