The young defender emerged as a genuine option in Dortmund’s first-team squad during the second half of last season. Reggiani made nine senior appearances, impressing with his performances and even finding the net during his breakthrough period.
However, the Italian has since seen his opportunities diminish considerably, with Ruhr Nachrichten reporting that a departure from the Black and Yellows is becoming increasingly likely.
According to the report, Reggiani has fallen behind Nico Schlotterbeck, Waldemar Anton, Joane Gadou, Ramy Bensebaini and Filippo Mané in the internal defensive hierarchy. The eventual return of long-term absentee Emre Can could further complicate matters, with Dortmund’s regular captain expected to be another option at centre-back once he is fit again.
Reggiani’s recent involvement underlines his current situation. After remaining an unused substitute in Dortmund’s 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen, the youngster was subsequently called up to the club’s U23 side competing in the Regionalliga West.
He featured for 45 minutes in their 3-2 victory over SG Wattenscheid 09, a further indication that first-team opportunities have become increasingly difficult to secure.
With his pathway into the senior side seemingly blocked by a number of established options, a separation could now be the most sensible outcome for both parties.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, a January departure is increasingly on the cards, and Dortmund would reportedly be unlikely to stand in the defender’s way should an opportunity arise.
For Reggiani, a move away could provide the regular playing time needed to continue his development, while Dortmund would have the opportunity to reassess their defensive options ahead of the second half of the season.
