This day 16 years ago, Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt took the reigns making him the longest serving coach in Germany. What a day it would be for the coach as his team celebrated a 4-2 win over ‘Die Werderaner’.
Bremen started to grow into the game as the half wore on ought to have levelled in the 40th minute. A low cross from Woltemade was perfectly placed but somehow evaded Weiser and Stage. No sooner said, Schmidt’s side would find themselves 2-0 to the good. Dinkci sauntered through the Bremen rearguard and hammered past Pavlenka. Some muted celebrations followed from the 21-year-old who had netted against his parent club.
Directly after the restart Heidenheim returned the favour when Traore handled the ball. Although Ducksch’s initial spot kick was saved by Muller, his save rebounded to the striker who headed home. Romano Schmid had the chance to equalise with the following attack only for the ball to trail left of the post. Just after the hour mark, Bremen had completed their comeback. Substitute Olivier Deman crossed for Weiser who rose highest to head past Muller who could do little to prevent the goal.
Four minutes later and Heidenheim restored their lead. Eren Dinkci at the double whose perfectly cushioned instep finish left the hosts 3-2 up. Ole Werner’s troops enraged by their short-lived parity. Niclas Beste who had quietly gone about his business all afternoon capped off a fine performance when he bagged Heidenheim’s fourth. Pavlenka was left rooted to the spot as Pieper obstructed his view. A historic result for the home side who win their first ever Bundesliga game.
