In a post-match interview with TF1, following France’s emphatic 14-0 victory against Gibraltar in EURO 2024 qualifying, Didier Deschamps was in high spirits as he joked about the demands he has of his captain Kylian Mbappé (24). The France captain was in fine form against Gibraltar as he scored a hat trick and assisted a further two goals on the night.
When asked by the media about the performance of the PSG attacker, the France boss joked, “I expect a lot more“. This appears to be in response to a criticism Luis Enrique made of Mbappé following PSG’s 3-0 victory against Reims, where the former Monaco attacker netted a hat trick.
In the aftermath of PSG’s victory against Reims, Luis Enrique said, “I’m not really happy with Kylian today. I have nothing to say about the goals but he can help the team more in different ways.” Mbappé has been rather dismissive of the criticism and continues to impress for club and country.
The World Cup winner’s hat trick against Gibraltar enabled him to take his career total to a new milestone of 300 goals. For France, the 24-year-old now has 46 goals to his name as he sets his sights on Thierry Henry and Olivier Giroud ahead of him.
