Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota – alongside his younger brother Andre Silva – has passed away after a fatal car accident during the off-season and his compatriot, Cristiano Ronaldo, has now posted a heartwarming statement regarding his death.

Jota, born and raised in Porto, passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning after being involved in a fatal car crash. BBC Sport reported that the car, a Lamborghini, left the road after a tyre blew out as they attempted to overtake another car.

Jota got married to his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, just a few weeks ago.

The vehicle was, as a result, set on fire and the emergency services later confirmed that the two young footballers had sadly passed away. Amid the terribly awful news, Liverpool released a statement to ask that Jota’s family, friends and those close to him receive the privacy they deserve at such a harrowing time.

Alongside the Merseysiders, FC Porto – a club he played 38 times for before moving to England – Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and the Portuguese Football Federation have all posted to honour the life of a brilliant fooballer and an even better man.

Ronaldo, too, has reacted to the sad news. Translated into English, the Portugal talisman – who played 32 times alongside the former Atletico Madrid and Porto forward – took to social media to commemorate the 28-year-old. He wrote:

“It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”

Having risen through the academy ranks in his homeland, Jota moved to England to join Wolverhampton Wanderers after a loan spell at Molineux. He scored 44 goals and plundered 19 assists for the Old Gold before catching the attention of Jurgen Klopp. He is a one-time Premier League champion, having won the title under Arne Slot in the 2024/25 campaign.
