Chelsea now ‘discussing’ move for ‘special’ £50m star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are discussing Romeo Lavia’s name as the Blues look to bring a new midfielder to Stamford Bridge next month, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

Graham Potter has quite a few problems in the middle of the park right now, and it looks like the west London club could sign the Southampton youngster to help address that.

Chelsea transfer news – Romeo Lavia

Earlier this month, transfer insider Dean Jones told GMS that Lavia is a name that Chelsea are still exploring.

The 18-year-old was a target for the Blues during the summer despite having only just joined Southampton, with the reliable Fabrizio Romano revealing that they had a £50m bid for him turned down.

However, it appears that Chelsea still retain an interest in Lavia heading into the January transfer window.

N’Golo Kante is currently sidelined and is out of contract at the end of the season, while Jorginho’s existing deal is also set to expire, so midfield has to be a priority for Potter right now.

What has Simon Phillips said about Romeo Lavia and Chelsea?

Phillips says Chelsea have looked at several different midfielders, including Lavia.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “They want a new midfielder in January. They’ve looked at a host of different names. Romeo Lavia is one that they’re currently talking about signing.”

Should Chelsea sign Romeo Lavia in January?

If Southampton are more open to selling this time around, then he is definitely a name worth considering.

While Lavia has not been able to play too many games for the Saints this season, when the Belgian has featured, he has made a big impact.

He was influential in Southampton’s first Premier League win of the campaign, a 2-1 victory against Leicester City. As per WhoScored, the teenager made two interceptions in that game, the most in his team, while he also had the second-highest pass success rate (91%).

His biggest contribution for Southampton so far, though, was probably his equaliser versus Chelsea ironically. It set the south coast club on the path to a 2-1 win after they had initially found themselves 1-0 down after Raheem Sterling’s opener.

Nathan Jones recently told The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell and other reporters that Lavia is a “special talent”. When you consider that and the fact that the Saints have already rejected a £50m bid for the former City player, it is hard to imagine them selling him next month. But if he is available, his performances at St Mary’s so far show that he could be a really good addition to Potter’s squad.
