Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admits, although it is unlikely, that he would like to see veteran Toni Kroos win the Ballon d’Or for his contribution in what could be another historic season for the club.
Kroos has established himself as a Los Blancos icon, winning four La Liga and Champions League trophies during his spell at the club. However, the German could yet add to his list of achievements by helping his side add to their record 14 Champions League titles when they face Borussia Dortmund in the final at the beginning of June.
The 34-year-old will then have the chance to help Germany win the European Championship just a few weeks later. Germany are the hosts for Euro 2024 and therefore are among the favourites to win the competition.
If the midfielder was able to claim three of the biggest trophies in world football in the same season, he would become one of the favourites to claim the Ballon d’Or. This award is given to the best player over the course of the previous year and is typically affected by the major honours won by the player.
The most recent winner was Lionel Messi in 2023 for his significant contribution in Argentina’s World Cup win in Qatar. Kroos has been a tremendous servant for Madrid and Ancelotti believes he could be in pole position to receive the Ballon d’Or if he wins the Champions League and Euros.
He said: “I’d like to see Toni Kroos winning the Ballon d’Or but I don’t think he will. But anything can happen.
“There is Euro 2024 this summer, if he wins Champions League and the Euros with Germany he could fight for the Ballon d’Or.”
Kroos is set to sit down with the club to decide his future after the UEFA Champions League final.
