Brighton considering fresh move for Said El Mala next summer

Brighton & Hove Albion retain an interest in FC Koln winger Said El Mala, according to transfer reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The Seagulls wanted to sign El Mala and his older brother Malek last summer, with a potential double deal reportedly reaching an advanced stage before falling through.

The 20-year-old came close to joining Borussia Dortmund last summer, but Koln rejected the German club’s final offer. He has since extended his contract with the Bundesliga side until 2031.

El Mala was also linked with Liverpool, but the Reds opted to sign Bradley Barcola instead.

The German forward enjoyed a brilliant campaign last season, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 36 games across all competitions.

He has also been included on the 25-man shortlist for the 2026 Golden Boy award, which recognises Europe’s best young player.

El Mala is known for his dribbling, creativity, and finishing. His pace also makes him a genuine threat during counter-attacks.

The Koln academy product fits Brighton recruitment profile, but it remains to be seen how he would fit into their squad if he joins the club.

The Seagulls have several wide players and bought Femi Azeez and Zadok Yohanna last summer to bolster their wing options.

Brighton may need to consider moving on one of their existing wingers to accommodate another signing in that position.

Kaoru Mitoma is the most likely to leave if Brighton decide to make room for El Mala, as the Japan international is already into the final 12 months of his contract.
