Chelsea are closing in on the appointment of a new technical director as the club have entered the ‘final stages of an agreement’ with former RB Leipzig chief Christopher Vivell, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
Co-owner Todd Boehly has not been shy in making his presence felt at Stamford Bridge and is now set to make another key appointment.
What is the latest on the appointment?
It was reported by The Telegraph last week that Chelsea were set to appoint Vivell as their new technical director.
The report adds that Vivell will be responsible for data and scouting, and is set to work alongside Graham Potter and his recruitment specialist Kyle Macaulay.
Vivell was dismissed from his role with Leipzig after the Bundesliga outfit lost ‘trust’ in the 35-year-old, according to chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff.
While the German admitted Vivell had done a ‘great job’, he added that ‘co-operation no longer made sense’ once there was no trust.
Meanwhile, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed Chelsea are set to raid Southampton for the services of director of recruitment Joe Shields, despite him only moving to the south coast from Manchester City in July.
What has Phillips said on the latest news?
Phillips understands that Vivell is in the final stages of negotiations with the Blues and a deal is now imminent.
He adds that another key appointment is also not far away from completion as Boehly continues to reshape the club.
Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “Chelsea are rebuilding the recruitment department, and as I’ve always said, we expect a number of new arrivals. Christopher Vivell of RB Leipzig is in the final stages of an agreement to become the new technical director at Chelsea. The club are also in discussions to bring in Joe Shields as director of recruitment from Southampton.”

Should Chelsea fans be excited by the news?
Boehly clearly has a plan and is determined to stick with it moving forward. Whether it works out or not, it is a tactic to be admired in many ways.
The American is clearly not too fussed about who he annoys in doing so as well, with Southampton joining Leipzig in not being too happy with the scenario.
After appointing Potter as their new boss, Boehly praised his work on and off the pitch, describing him as an ‘innovator’, so it is obvious he is aiming to change how Chelsea do things moving forward.
If these new appointments help in that goal, then it could be an exciting time for supporters.
