A major update has been given on the health status of former UFC fighter, Ben Askren, after recent events caused him to fall seriously ill and be taken into care.
On Saturday night, Askren’s wife, Amy, confirmed on Facebook that her husband had been hospitalised due to developing “severe pneumonia” that appeared very suddenly. Worryingly, she revealed that he was unresponsive to anyone or anything at that particular time.
Initial reports had mentioned a possible case of a severe staph infection affecting Askren, but nothing has been confirmed or denied regarding those rumours.
The shocking news came during Saturday’s UFC 316 event in New Jersey, which was headlined by Merab Dvalishvili and Sean O’Malley’s rematch, and also featured Julianna Pena and Kayla Harrison’s contest. An outpouring of support and love headed in Askren and his family’s way as a result of the unfortunate news. Former UFC stars, Chael Sonnen and Henry Cejudo, as well as combat sports journalist, Ariel Helwani, were among the many in the MMA community to send their best wishes.

DC has spoken out about the status of the former UFC fighter
Now, Askren’s co-host on the Funky & The Champ YouTube show and MMA legend, Daniel Cormier, has given the public a detailed breakdown of his friend’s situation.
The former two-weight UFC champion explained: “Ben Askren, our good friend from ‘Funky and the Champ’, is having a hard time. That night that we did the last episode of ‘Funky and the Champ’, Ben was complaining about some issues.”

Cormier then revealed the current whereabouts of Askren, adding: “He had some infections. He had a really tough time when he went to that convention in Vegas. He was stuck there for a while. I wanna report that he’s now back home in Wisconsin. He’s with his family, his beautiful wife, Amy.”
Cormier also touched on the pure bleakness of the matter, mentioning: “Everybody is just kind of praying that Ben gets better, and we can start moving forward with life for Ben. It’s so sad. I don’t know how things like this happen to someone who is so good. We are constantly thinking about him every single day.”
Despite having just three fights in the UFC, Askren had a strong MMA career as his two UFC losses were the only ones of his professional career, coming against Jorge Masvidal and Demian Maia. Askren held both the Bellator and One Championship welterweight titles, with multiple successful defences of the two belts.
Before retiring, Askren was able to display plenty of versatility in the combat sports world as he was known for more than just his MMA fights. He competed in wrestling and submission grappling events, while he also took on YouTuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul, in a professional boxing bout four years ago. Unfortunately, he could not replicate his quality in the boxing world as he was stopped by Paul in just one round.
