On Tuesday evening, Bayern Munich overcame Galatasaray in a raucous Istanbul to make it 16 straight wins in the Champions League group stages. However, at times during the game, Thomas Tuchel’s side looked leggy and vulnerable, especially in the first half.
While they would eventually pull away after the interval, the first half highlighted how strenuous continuous competition can be on such a thin squad. With Die Rekordmeister having to play a game on average every four and a half days up until the Christmas break, it is no surprise that Tuchel has looked to add cover in his defensive areas.
However, as previously reported, Bayern turned down the chance to sign Jérôme Boateng due to personal issues away from football, while they have also elected against signing former Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis as emergency cover. Nevertheless, this is because, according to Bild, Bayern have decided that further reinforcement will be required in January.
The German champions would still be keen to sign Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea, as the 24-year-old can offer cover in central defence and at right-back. However, there is a reluctance to go in for their long-term target due to his current injury, which has kept him out since the start of the season.
While other targets will certainly be looked at, Bayern have not given up on signing a defensive midfielder, with Fulham’s João Palhinha and Nice’s Khéphren Thuram at the top of their wishlist. Thuram could be considered a cheaper alternative to Palhinha, who recently signed a new deal with the London-based club; however, if the summer has taught us anything, it is that it will be far from straightforward for Die Rekordmeister.
