Bayern Munich and Liverpool to go head-to-head for Castello Lukeba

RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba is a subject of transfer interest from both Bayern Munich and Liverpool this summer, according to Foot Mercato.

Since joining Leipzig from Olympique Lyonnais in 2023, Lukeba has quickly established himself as a mainstay for the Bundesliga outfit.

In his debut season, he was tasked with filling the void left by Josko Gvardiol’s departure to Manchester City, and the Frenchman rose to the occasion.

Aiming to pick up where he left off, Lukeba endured a relatively underwhelming 2024-25 season largely due to a thigh problem that limited his appearances across all competitions to 31.

Still, Lukeba remains highly rated, with both Bayern and Liverpool actively monitoring his situation, while Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly in the mix.

Bayern are targeting reinforcements at the back as Kim Min-jae’s future at the Allianz Arena continues to hang in the balance. The Bavarians have been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Renato Veiga.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are in the market for a new centre-back amid the uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s contractual situation.

Arne Slot’s side are the favourites to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace at the moment, but further defensive acquisitions could be on the way.

Lukeba is under contract until 2029, following a recent extension that includes a release clause of €90 million.

However, Leipzig and the player have an understanding that he could be allowed to leave for a lower fee, especially after the club missed out on Champions League qualification for next season.

Leipzig are expected to demand a fee in the region of €70-80 million for Lukeba, who is open to a move this summer, motivated by the desire to play regular Champions League football and continue his progression at the highest level.
