Barcelona ‘will make offers’ for £87m duo in January at Camp Nou

Barcelona are expected to make offers for Chelsea duo N’Golo Kante and Jorginho in the January transfer window, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

What’s the latest on Kante and Jorginho’s futures?

The Blues midfielders see their contract expire at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023, and are therefore available to talk to foreign clubs about a free transfer in the New Year.

The Evening Standard recently claimed that Graham Potter’s side are open to renewing both of their deals, but want to sign Kante on lesser terms due to his ongoing injury problems.

The report further revealed that Barcelona ‘want to exploit’ the contract situation involving the pair, and it’s suggested that Kante himself would be open to join the Catalan giants or La Liga rivals Real Madrid.

Can Barcelona afford Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Jorginho?

Having signed Kante for £30m, and Jorginho for £57m, the duo helped Chelsea win the Champions League a couple of years ago, but look set for an exit from Stamford Bridge sooner rather than later.

Barcelona’s financial problems have been well documented in recent times, and found serious difficulties in trying to register players like Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen among others despite signing them on free transfers.

And, with the Catalan giants on the brink of Champions League elimination following a draw to Inter, they are set to miss out on the major riches that come with a deep run in European football’s premier competition.

Targeting the likes of Kante and Jorginho would be very ambitious not just in terms of their quality on the pitch, but also the kind of money it would take too.

The duo, who earn a reported £400k-a-week currently, would certainly command significant wages were they move to the Camp Nou next summer on a free, so it remains to be seen how Barcelona go about trying to manoeuvre their finances to sign them.
