Barcelona vs Sevilla Preview

Camp Nou empty

Camp Nou is the setting for the Sunday night game in LaLiga. Barcelona are gunning for another win in their relentless pursuit of this league title but this could be a trickier game now Sevilla look to be improving following some decent January additions.

Evenso, Barcelona will be strongly expected to win. Xavi’s men reached an impressive 50 point tally at the midway point in the campaign with a 2-1 win in Seville against Real Betis in midweek. They are consistently only winning matches by one goal but overall there is a solid feel to this side throughout and it’s also pretty clear now what their strongest eleven is, which certainly wasn’t the case last season or earlier this.

A lack of injury problems is also a bonus for Xavi with Ousmane Dembele the only absentee as they head into another busy month with a very attractive Europa League tie against Manchester United on the horizon. They have given themselves some margin for error in LaLiga with so few dropped points until this point, but Real Madrid aren’t that far behind and they will want to keep grinding out the wins in the league.

Sevilla meanwhile can also reflect on a better January, both on and off the pitch. Home wins over Elche, Cadiz and Getafe have strengthened Jorge Sampaoli’s position and moved the Andalusian side up the table. They will fancy they are now well placed to continue to climb the league and move away from any kind of relegation battle, but there is still work to be done.

Their January business saw them add Loïc Badé, Bryan Gil and Papa Gueye while Lucas Ocampos returned from his loan spell at Ajax. Things have been so poor this season that all four players could potentially break into the starting XI. Indeed Badé and Ocampos both started the 3-0 win over Elche last time out, Sevilla’s most comfortable outing so far this season.

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-0 Sevilla

Sevilla are improving but their wins have come at home to three of the weakest teams in the league and travelling to Camp Nou is very much a different kind of test. It’s hard to see them getting anything against what will be very close to a full strength Barcelona side unless Xavi opts for a bit of rotation.
