Barcelona to renew Marcos Alonso’s contract

Barcelona are planning to extend Marcos Alonso’s contract, report Marca.

The Spaniard, who was not included in Luis Enrique’s Spain squad going to the World Cup, arrived to Barcelona from Chelsea this past summer in a deal which saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang move back to London.

Despite the difficult start to his career in the Blaugrana shirt, Alonso has established himself as a regular in the Barcelona starting XI. Even though he has been playing as a left-back in his previous clubs, Xavi has been using him as a centre-back in the last couple of games.

While initially Barça wanted to sign Alonso on a three-year deal, they could only offer him a one-year contract due to Financial Fair Play regulations. Nonetheless, the club board are keen to extend the 31-year-old’s stay by two more years once the season restarts in January and to deter interest from other teams.
