In a recent print edition, Corriere dello Sport mentioned that Aston Villa are in the mix to sign AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli this summer. It has been claimed that the Villans could face stiff competition from Newcastle United for the Italy international during this summer transfer period.

Romagnoli’s Excellent Run Of Form In Italian Football Last Season

Romagnoli had a successful campaign at San Siro as he helped AC Milan win the Serie A title recently. The Anzio-born talent scored one goal and secured one assist in 26 appearances for the Italian club last season in all competitions.

The 12-time Italy international gave a good account of himself defensively based on his average of 1.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the back after making 88.8% of his attempted passes in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).

Is Romagnoli A Good Choice For Aston Villa This Summer?

Romagnoli is a tough-tackling central defender who can time his challenges well to secure possession back for his team on the defensive third of the field. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and doesn’t mind putting his strong 1.85m frame on the line to block a goal-bound shot inside his half.

The Italy international excels at playing his way out from inside his half. Therefore, he will be a brilliant fit for Steven Gerrard’s style of play at Villa Park.

We can expect Romagnoli to enhance the overall quality of Aston Villa‘s first XI. He could even go on to form a solid defensive partnership with Tyrone Mings at the West Midlands club in the coming seasons.

At 27, Romagnoli is playing at the top of his game at the moment. Hence, he has what it takes to make an instant impact in the Premier League as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in English football. All in all, the AC Milan sensation will be an excellent choice for the Villans to consider before the end of this transfer window as he is good enough to help them push for a top-eight finish in the English top-flight next season.
