Arsenal ‘looking’ to bring in another new signing at the Emirates

Arsenal are still looking to sign a new winger this summer after missing out on Raphinha, says talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

However, the journalist has also told GIVEMESPORT that any potential arrival could depend on what happens with Nicolas Pepe.

What is the latest news involving Pepe?

Last month, Spanish outlet Diario de Sevilla claimed that Sevilla and Leeds United were two clubs who were interested in signing Pepe.

The 27-year-old failed to step onto the pitch in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on Friday and made just five starts in the Premier League last season.

Considering the above, now may be the time for Pepe to move on, though his wages could be a problem for suitors. According to spotrac, the Ivorian is currently earning £140,000 a week at the Emirates.

Out wide is an area Mikel Arteta tried to strengthen earlier in the transfer window after making a move for Raphinha. However, Arsenal saw their bid for the Brazilian rejected and he has since gone on to join Barcelona.

What has Crook said about Arsenal and Pepe?

Crook believes Arsenal still want to sign a new winger this summer but thinks they may have to get rid of Pepe in order for that to happen.

Speaking to GMS, the talkSPORT reporter said: “To be honest, I think they are looking to bring in a wide player, but it might depend on whether or not they can get Nicolas Pepe off the wage bill. Clearly nobody’s going to pay the £72m that Arsenal did.”

Why have things not worked out for Pepe at Arsenal?

There were a lot of high expectations when Pepe arrived at the Emirates back in 2019. He joined the Gunners after an incredible final season with Lille, where he scored 23 goals in all competitions.

Where the pressure obviously came from was his £72m price tag, though, and he has not been able to deal with it.

What year did Arsenal move into the Emirates Stadium?

Is the above the only reason why Pepe has struggled at Arsenal? Probably not. There has been a change of manager since his arrival, while the Gunners, as a whole, have not been consistent, which can make things difficult for any player.

However, it would be naive to suggest that Pepe’s price tag and the pressure for him to deliver have not had an impact on the Ivory Coast international. Ultimately, a departure this summer now looks to be in the best interest of all parties.
