Alan Shearer unleashed a foul-mouthed rant at the expense of VAR and has demanded answers from PGMOL chief Howard Webb on three specific questions. The Premier League has already had its fair share of VAR-related controversies this season, just three gameweeks into the new campaign.
From Crystal Palace’s disallowed free-kick vs Chelsea to Manchester United’s stoppage-time penalty against Burnley, there have been plenty of decisions that have split opinion. But one appears to have sent Shearer over the edge, as he failed to hold back in his incredible criticism of one call that took place this past weekend.
Shearer Tears Into VAR
Speaking on the latest edition of the Rest is Football podcast, the topic of Fulham’s disallowed goal against Chelsea came up in conversation. Eighteen-year-old Josh King thought he had bagged his first senior strike before VAR pulled play back to a foul by Rodrigo Muniz on Trevor Chalobah in the build-up.
Muniz appeared to accidentally stand on Chalobah’s foot while turning with the ball, which was enough for the goal to be ruled out, despite the likes of Mike Dean completely disagreeing with the change of decision.
Shearer was clearly also not a fan of the decision, as he completely laid into VAR and demanded answers from PGMOL chief Webb.
“What the f*** are they thinking? Tell me. You’re not going to re-referee. You’re not going to interfere. And it’s only for the clear and obvious. Three things. Where have those three things gone? It’s b*******.
“Seriously. What has happened to the game that they don’t want to interfere? They don’t want to re-referee? Tell me what’s happened to those three things, please. Howard Webb, you’re in charge. Tell us what has happened to those three things because every single game you’re interfering, you’re re-refereeing and you’re not giving decisions that are clear and obvious. Now, please explain to us what has gone wrong from when you announced it to now.”
Understandably, several fans responded to the post in agreement, with one fan replying: “Well said Alan,” while another added: “Agree Mr Shearer, game is a bit of a joke now,” in just snippets of the reaction.
Fulham manager Marco Silva was also clearly disgruntled by the decision, but refused to comment at full-time at Stamford Bridge to avoid any further punishment from the FA.
