Olmo’s hat-trick sinks Bayern in Kane’s debut

Dani Olmo scored a hat-trick as RB Leipzig crushed Bayern Munich 3-0 in the Supercup at the Allianz Arena. Harry Kane made his debut in the second half, but couldn’t save the German champions.

German record champions Bayern Munich got off to a dreadful start to their 2023/24 campaign as they went down 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the Supercup at the Allianz Arena tonight.

Things went badly for the Bavarians from the outset, with Dani Olmo sidefooting the ball into the corner of the net from a set-piece just four minutes into the game to give Leipzig an early lead.

Having only arrived in Munich yesterday, Harry Kane started from the bench, with 18-year-old Mathys Tel starting up front. The youngster didn’t make the most of his opportunity and missed a glorious chance to open the scoring in the 16th minute when he shot straight at RB Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich from a promising position.

Instead, it was Leipzig who doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time after a fine piece of skill from Olmo. Receiving the ball with his back to goal, he performed an audacious turn, leaving two defenders in his wake before finishing through Sven Ulreich’s net.

The second half began with chances aplenty, but neither side could immediately change the scoreline.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel responded by bringing on Harry Kane for his 63rd minute debut, and the star signing had been on the pitch for just four minutes before things went from bad to worse for the Bavarians.

The referee pointed to the penalty spot after Noussair Mazraoui handled Nicolas Seiwald’s header, and Olmo stepped up to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-0 for Leipzig.

Mazraoui came close to pulling one back in the closing stages of the game, before Ulreich made a great save to deny Benjamin Sesko from making it 4-0 at the other end.

Kane was unable to impose himself on a night to forget for Bayern, who will look to bounce back when they open the Bundesliga season against Werder Bremen on Friday.

Leipzig, on the other hand, will head into the Bundesliga season full of confidence after a very promising Supercup win over the champions, despite losing key players Konrad Laimer, Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai and Josko Gvardiol.
