Serie A reigning champions AC Milan are intensifying their efforts to snap up Naby Keita on a free transfer, according to the Mirror.
Since his move from RB Leipzig in 2018, Keita has failed to live up to the lofty expectations that convinced Liverpool to fork out a then club-record fee of £51.6 million and he is set to leave Anfield as a free agent when his current deal expires.
The Guinea international is already free to speak with interested clubs outside England over a Bosman move.
A switch to Italian football is now on the cards for Keita off the back of an injury-plagued couple of seasons in the red half of Merseyside.
Alongside AC Milan, city rivals Inter Milan have also been linked with a move for Keita as doubts over the long-term future of Marcelo Brozovic continue to emerge.
Returning to Leipzig is also not ruled out for Keita after the club tried a late swoop to bring him back during the just-concluded January window as a potential replacement for Konrad Laimer, who will join Bayern Munich in June.
In the meantime, Keita will be aiming to help Liverpool turn a disastrous season around as the Reds sit 10th in the Premier League standings. They have also been knocked out of both domestic cups.
Having started each of his side’s last four games across all competitions, Keita is enjoying a rare run of matches in the first-team, but it is safe to say that he has done nothing to convince Liverpool of his long-term value.
It is no surprise that Liverpool have identified Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham as a prime target as they look to revamp a dysfunctional midfield department.
